Following the widespread reported sighting of the crescent, the month of Sha’baan 1439 has ended with 29 days.

Consequently, the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) has determined that Ramadan, in South Africa, starts tonight. The first day of Ramadan 1439 will therefore correspond to Thursday, 17 May 2018.

We wish all the Muslims the world over Ramadan Mubarak. May the Almighty accept our acts of worship, fasts and devotions.

The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa’s Central Hilaal Committee acts on behalf of the United Ulama Council in the coordination of the sighting of the moon.

In the light and spirit of the Sunnah, we appeal to jamaats to go out and seek the sighting of the new moon every month. The next sighting of the moon for the determining the start of Shawwal 1439 and the ushering in of the Day of Eid-ul-Fitr shall be after sunset on Thursday 14 June 2018, in-sha-Allah.
