Moonsighting Procedures: A Community Notice
The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa Central Hilaal Committee, based at our head office in Johannesburg, is responsible for crescent observations. Monthly sightings of the new moon (crescent) are co-ordinated by this committee.
The crescent of the Islamic month of Shawwaal (Eid-ul-Fitr) usually generates a huge amount of interest in the community. The committee has therefore decided to present the following guidelines to the members of our community to follow on the eve of the sighting.
1. We encourage all members of our community to scan the horizon in search of the new crescent. It is recommended that the horizon be observed, starting before sunset, as the crescent appears in the area around which the sun sets.
2. This year the crescent must be searched for, in the evening, on Thursday, 14 June 2018.
3. In the event that a person sights the crescent, after sunset on the night, observe the following:
a. Note the condition of the horizon such as being clear, cloudy, or partly cloudy.
b. Record the actual time of the sighting.
c. Note the location of the crescent, whether it is to the right-hand side or to the left, of the area where the sun had set?
d. Note the shape/orientation of the new moon.
e. Record the number of individuals from the group that had physically sighted the crescent themselves.
f. If the Imam of your community is present at the place of sighting, he will promptly complete the required testimony (Shahâdah) procedures.
g. If the Imam is not present then all the individuals that had sighted the crescent are required to proceed to the closest Masjid and give testimony, in person in the presence of the Imam.
h. The Imam shall ask certain questions related to the sighting as well as personal details of the person(s) that sight the crescent. The details are required for the purpose of Shahâdah.
A sighting will only be confirmed as official once it has been accepted by the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa together with the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA).
